2024 News Update

Welcome all to the new 2024 sailing season. This coming year promises to be as ambitious as last year with more activities planned throughout the season.

The Club Soling (8 metre Olympic sailboat) was used both on Wednesday evening TCYC racing and it was entered in the Torquay regatta where it came 2nd in it’s class. It was also sailed in a few Sunday races giving more members the chance to experience small cruiser sailing.

The Soling sailboat is moored on the water and easy access from the beach. It is ideal for taking out people who do not have much sailing experience as it is very stable and predictable; it handles like a big dinghy.

The clubhouse has 2 rowing machines which are used by individuals and local rowing organisations in the village. There are a selection of weights and benches for the more dedicated fitness minded people.

Last summer in June SSC organised a Heritage weekend in June with dinghy races and BBQs throughout the weekend. Old and heritage sailboats were invited to take part in the races. On the Saturday evening the Motor Vessel “Pride of Exmouth” cruised the local area to Torquay with some 200 people on board. There were 3 different entertainment acts including Elvis. For a full account of the weekend click here.

Chris Clarance has already planned the same event this year and ‘Elvis’ has been booked.

There are now 3 RS Aeros racing on Sunday mornings; these lightweight twitchy dinghies are great fun and well suited to agile sailors, but a little challenging when the wind gets up!

It is planned to sail on Friday evenings when the days are longer and water gets warmer. Please see here for the proposed timetable. On these evenings there will not be any formal races and it will be a good opportunity to practice and experiment with different rig settings. Timings here: Friday Evenings

Shaldon Sailing Club increased its membership last year and now there is a core of dedicated ‘windy sailors’ who like to go out when there is a chance of the boat planing. For those without their own dinghy the club has dinghies available for them to use. For a small donation these can be taken out.

There is a new online form for new members see …..link…….

All we need now is for sunshine, warm temperatures and favourable winds
